Second Annual Judith Hendler Design Awards: Cocoon Cloak

In a desire to find sanctuary and comfort in a time of turmoil, jewelry designer Judith Hendler, invited Southern California Community College students and Huntington Beach Art Center Members to create the unisex Cocoon Cloak. Answering the base needs of self-expression and protection from the elements on the human form, the competition was inspired by traditional multi-functional garments like the Caftan, Tunic, and Poncho.

Participants included Fullerton College, Huntington Beach Art Center Members, Long Beach City College, Mesa College, Mira Costa College, Orange Coast College, Palomar College, Saddleback College. The students and members were asked to create a garment using a simple pattern created by Judith Hendler that embodied the ethos of sustainable design: re-use, recycle, up-cycle. Judith reviewed the students and the members creations and awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.
